Hi and welcome to the latest update from TTWK. It's been a while since we reported so lots to get through below:
We have had to rearrange our planned events for July. Sadly, Patrick Holden from the Soil Association has had to postpone his planned visit to West Kirby (he received an invitation from Prince Charles for the same date). His talk on July 8th and the associated unleashing event on July 11th have now been postponed until the Autumn.
Our next event is entitled Ideas into Action and takes place on Wednesday, June 24th. It is now 18 months since TTWK was formed. So much has happened since then that now is a good time to take stock of where we are and how best to proceed. All welcome. You may have practical ideas for projects, how we can raise funds or reach more people in the community. Whatever your inspiration bring it along to the URC on Meols Drive at 8pm. Admission free, refreshments available.
We have an exciting event on Monday, July 13th with the screening of the acclaimed film “Age of Stupid”. Starring Pete Postlethwaite, the film created a huge stir on its release earlier this year. Admission is free but there is a suggested donation of £3.50 per person to cover the licence fee and venue hire. The venue again is the URC at 8pm. Spaces are limited so please come in good time.
Our food group remains a hive of activity with lots to report. We produced a survey of national allotment waiting lists in collaboration with the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners. The report pdf can be downloaded here. The study looked at those sites managed by the principal English councils, and showed that on average, for every 100 plots there are now 49 people on waiting lists. In the last major study in 1997 there were only 4 people waiting for every 100 plots in England. TTWK was recently interviewed about the study for Radio 4s You and Yours programme (broadcast yesterday June 18th (33 minutes in) if you want to listen again). Also, this month’s Gardening Which featured our campaign for increased allotment provision in Wirral. The group continues to meet regularly. Notes from meetings of the group so far can be viewed on our website. The next meeting is Tuesday 30th June at 8pm. Anyone is welcome, please come along if you have ideas and would like to get involved in a local food project. Email ttwk.food@gmail.com for more details or if you would like to be added to the food contact list.
The home energy event organised by the energy group recently was a great success. Thanks to everyone who participated. The group has launched a solar hot water project to help those interested in bringing renewable energy into the home and cut costs. If you are interested, do get involved. More details here.
The transport group has helped design a survey to find out more about the needs of pedestrians within West Kirby. It only takes a few minutes to fill in and can be accessed via our blog site.
Thanks to all the kids who participated in our Butterfly Workshop at West Kirby Library. Click on the link to see some photos of the event. Bring your butterflies to the library on Friday, July 10th from 12:30-5pm and they will be put up along with a display about Transition Towns.
Finally, there is a fascinating article from a recent edition of The Daily Telegraph showing how Chester is faring in the recession compared with the Transition-inspired approach in Totnes, Devon. Read all about it here.
