Recent Events

If you enjoyed some of our recent events you can relive the magic online. Reports/photos are available for the 2nd Hoylake Food Fair and the most recent Songs on Toast.

West Kirby Farmers' Market
The TTWK Food Group has decided to set up a separate committee to develop a Farmers' Market in West Kirby. This will be a market for genuine local food producers selling only what they themselves have produced.  Let us know if you would be interested in joining the Farmers' Market Group.
We have dates in mind and producers queuing to come, but are being somewhat frustrated by the Council at the moment who don't seem to be able to measure the distance from Birkenhead to West Kirby.  Is there a Chartered Surveyor out there who could give us a (pro bono) opinion on the distance between two specified points in Wirral?

Incredible Edible Wirral
Ever fancied a spot of guerilla gardening?  Courgettes at the Concourse, lettuces at the library, peppers in the park?  Have a look at the Incredible Edible Todmorden website for inspiration (http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/home). Incredible Edible Hoylake has already got started, planting some herbs, fruit and lettuces around town. Come to a meeting on 23rd May at Melrose Hall.  For more details download their poster. www.transitiontownwestkirby.org.uk/files/incredible_edible_hoylake.doc

Local Food Directory
We would like to put together a directory of which local businesses support local food.  For example, did you know that Roberts butchers in The Crescent make their own sausages from West Kirby pork (China Farm).  They're just introducing pork & apple, pork & leek and pork & tomato. Go into local shops and ask for local food, and then let us know what you find out!  Email ttwk.food@gmail.com

Allotments in Pensby
We are investigating the possibility of a new allotment site in Pensby.  Anyone in the Pensby/Irby area who wants to get involved in developing this site should email us at ttwk.food@gmail.com

Dale Farm Plant Sale
Sunday 15th May between 10 to 4pm. As well as perennial, bedding plants and some organic veg plants for sale (all grown on the farm), there will be a BBQ and other refreshments, some organic vegetables for sale and of course their fantastic preserves and honey (beautifully presented - make great presents).
51 Oldfield Rd, Heswall Wirral CH60 6SN. Tel: 0151 342 7819

Claremont Farm
Local food workshops at Claremont Farm, including beekeeping, cheese making, sausage making and preserving. For more details on the courses and how to book, see their website

Allotment Waiting lists in England 2011
TTWK has just published a new report on the allotment waiting lists of every principal local authority in England.
http://www.transitiontownwestkirby.org.uk/files/ttwk_nsalg_survey_2011.pdf

It demonstrates that demand is still high.  It explains that local authorities have a statutory duty to provide sufficient allotments, and shows that the number of plots in new allotment sites brought into use by local authorities in the last year represents only about 1% of the number of people on local authority waiting lists.

The Government seems to think that TTWK is now the authority on allotment waiting lists.
