Learn to Ride a Bike with Confidence
Starting Friday 5th October
Sustrans Bike it officer, Simon Wallis has some funding to pilot a West Kirby Fire Station Community Cycling Hub for adults wanting to learn to ride a bike for the first time or wanting to improve their confidence in cycling.  Maybe you'd just like to come along and have a cup of tea with a fire fighter!   The fun sessions will be run by pleasant volunteers with the help of Sustrans Bike It, the council's Active Families Development Officer http://www.wirral.gov.uk/my-services/leisure-and-culture/sports/sports-development/active-families , Bikeability Cycling Instructors, Transition Town and WK Fire Station.

The initial sessions will take place on the yard of the West Kirby Fire Station as a protected environment between 1pm and 3pm each Friday afternoon leading up to Christmas starting Friday 5th October.

The Fire Station Community Cycling Hub will signpost people to more advanced on-road free instructor led cycle training, lead family rides, instructor lead mountain bike adventure opportunities, leisurely Breeze rides for women who might like to stop off for tea and cake en route, cycle maps, bike maintenance tips, Transition Town activity notices, Fire Service Advice and more.

Buy Local Food
What foods are in season this Autumn?
Foods at their best in Autumn include beetroot, butternut squash, celeriac, jerusalem artichoke, kale, leeks, parsnips, runner beans, swede, sweetcorn, turnips, watercress, apples, blackberries, figs, pears, plums, chestnuts, game, goose, lamb, brill, crab, mackerel, plaice, turbot.

Where to buy them?
Colin Lunt for local veg, Roberts butcher for Welsh lamb, Hinton’s for local organic lamb and game, Hoylake Fisheries for fish from the Dee.

Why buy local seasonal food?
It keeps our town centre active and profitable and an attractive place to do the weekly shop. It keeps money circulating within the local community, supporting local jobs. It’s fresher and better for the environment.

Seasonal Recipe
Venison Burger - Serves: 4
Easy & Quick. Prep: 15 mins Cook: 15 mins
Mix - 500g coarsely minced venison, ½ a large onion, (finely chopped), 3 generous heads of parsley, (finely chopped), 3 egg yolks and 1 handful of white breadcrumbs soaked in ¼ pint of milk. Season to taste. Cover the bowl and put in the fridge until ready to cook.
Using a little flour shape the burgers into rounds, this quantity will make about 4 - 6 burgers. Cook under a pre-heated grill for about 5 minutes on each side or to taste.
